The University of Massachusetts will face New Hampshire in the first college football game to be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, the schools and the New England Patriots officially announced today.
The teams will meet each of the next two seasons at Gillette, home of the NFL's Patriots. They will meet Oct. 23, 2010 with New Hampshire as the home team, and Oct. 22, 2011 with UMass as home team. The Globe's Mark Blaudschun first reported the agreement in January.
“We are extremely excited to bring college football to Gillette Stadium,” said Robert Kraft, Patriots Chairman and CEO, in a statement released by the team. “We look forward to creating a tremendous atmosphere for these two great New England rivals, their students, alumni and fans. We have celebrated many memorable moments at Gillette Stadium and hope that the memory of playing in the inaugural college football game at Gillette Stadium will last a lifetime for all of the game’s participants.”
Tickets for the games will go on sale later this spring through Ticketmaster (800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com).
Gillette has also hosted Major League Soccer and international soccer matches, high school football and college lacrosse.
