UMass guard declares for NBA draft
Anthony Gurley has declared for the NBA draft with one year of eligibility remaining at UMass.
"Basically, I'm just trying to get a gauge of where I stand in the eyes of the NBA scouts," said Gurley, who was reached by phone Thursday afternoon. "I'm just going into the workouts to get some feedback from the teams."
Gurley, a 6-4 guard who started his collegiate career at Wake Forest before transferring to UMass, has not retained an agent. He averaged 13.6 points (second on the team) in 32 games coming off the bench last season.
With next year being his fifth year in college, Gurley sees this as his natural "draft class." However, not hiring an agent allows him to test the waters and return to college if he doesn't like how things project in the draft. Players must withdraw from the draft by June 14. The draft is June 24.
"I have been in college for four years," Gurley explained. "I'm technically going into my draft class, if I had not transferred."
When asked about the option of playing overseas as well, the former Newton North star wasn't enthusiastic about the idea.
"My goal is to play in the NBA some day," Gurley said. "I don't try to play to go overseas. I'm trying to play in the NBA."
