Globe sports reporter Nick Cafardo said the Ortiz deal is now in language stage according to major league source.
The Globe's Peter Abraham tweeted earlier that two sources expected the deal to be completed Friday night.
Globe staff are working to confirm the deal.
Earlier in the day, the Red Sox made a one-year qualifying offer that essentially guaranteed the team a draft pick if another team - the Rangers were reportedly interested in the designated hitter - signed Ortiz.
Ortiz has been quiet in recent weeks, despite being publicly criticized by former manager Bobby Valentine, but the word from the TD Garden, just as news of the deal is coming out, is that Big Papi is on hand for the Celtics home opener.
