On Tuesday the South Atlantic League announced the rosters for their upcoming All-Star Game set for Tuesday, June 18th at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey, and in the face of a 16-39 record the Greenville Drive had two standouts recognized with selections to the 54th annual event.
First baseman David Chester was chosen as the starting designated hitter for the Southern All-Stars and second baseman Mookie Betts was named to the team as a utility infielder.
It is the first All-Star game for both players since being selected as members of the 2011 draft class; Betts picked by Boston in the 5th round and Chester in the 33rd.
A .356 average in May has Betts currently batting .280 with a .417 on-base percentage and .926 OPS.
In 48 games Betts has 49 hits, 23 for extra bases, including 8 home runs (he had 0 in 71 games with Lowell last season) to go along with 17 RBIs, 38 runs and 11 stolen bases.
In his 52 games he has collected 50 hits, 42 RBIs and 22 runs while batting .260 with a .464 slugging percentage.
"It is always nice to be recognized for your play on the field and I'm sure that David and Mookie are excited about being selected,” said Drive manager Carlos Febles in a story released by the team earlier today (read here). "These guys are prime examples of the kind of players that the Red Sox hope to develop in their minor league system, and we couldn't be prouder."
Other players of note selected to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game include former Pirates second-round pitcher-turned-slugger Stetson Allie (North), New York Mets highest rated catching prospect Kevin Plawecki (North), South starting pitcher Rafael De Paula a 'Top 10' Yankees prospect and one of the San Francisco Giants top pitching prospects in Chris Stratton (South).
The Carolina League, set to face the California League on June 18th, will announce their All-Star roster in the coming days and Salem Red Sox third baseman Garin Cecchini should be a lock while others like Blake Swihart, Mike Augliera and Henry Owens will have to wait and see.
