We have more monthly honors to bestow to the two other New England affiliated teams that were in action in May. By the end of the month this list will multiply by two (Connecticut Tigers and Vermont Lake Monsters), but for now we focus on the Best of May from New Britain and New Hampshire.
New Britain Rock Cats
Batter: Josmil Pinto – Danny Santana made a solid case for the nod, but Pinto’s May could not be ignored even though it was somehow not as good as his April. He did post the same batting average in both months, hitting .333, but upped his on-base percentage from .413 to .441 after drawing 19 walks. Pinto hit 3 home runs and had 18 RBIs and 17 runs scored.
Pitcher: Logan Darnell – Darnell turned into an innings eater for New Britain, tossing 41 2/3 frames over 6 starts. He went 2-3 on the month but posted a 2.38 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, highlighted by a scoreless 8-innings on May 23rd versus Binghamton when he struck out a season-high 9 batters. In 15 1/3 more innings than Darnell pitching in April he walked 5 less batters, giving up only 7 free passes in May while K’ing 33.
New Hampshire Fisher Cats
Batter: Kevin Pillar – Continuing to set the table at the top of the Fisher Cats order Pillar pumped out 41 hits in May, giving him an Eastern League best 76 hits. He scored 22 runs, drove in 13 and collected his first two triples at the Double-A level. Pillar had 13 extra-base hits on the month and was 5-for-8 on stolen base attempts
Pitcher: Sean Nolin – He arrived from extended spring training after recovering from a groin injury and wasted no time in making his mark. In May he went 2-0 in four starts with a 1.77 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 20 Ks in 20 1/3 innings. Nolin made his big league debut in the middle of the month, but returned to New Hampshire and returned to form following a tough start with the Blue Jays.
