There were more than 4.9 million game-related posts during the game on Twitter, the social media site reported Tuesday. Team USA captain Clint Dempsey gained more than 27,000 followers on his verified account Monday. Traffic spiked at 173,738 Tweets Per Minute following Dempsey's goal 34 seconds into the game.

There were multiple celebrations nationwide set off by Brooks' goal. They were similar in intensity to how hockey fans reacted to T.J. Oshie's shootout winner against the Russians in the Olympics. The YouTube clip below was from an outdoor watch party sponsored by the MLS team Sporting Kansas City.

The MLS' Houston Dynamo posted this outburst via Vine following Brooks' goal from Lucky's in Houston.

Here's how the celebration looked from Harrison, N.J., inside Red Bull Arena.

And that Wikipedia entry comparing Brooks to Abraham Lincoln? It had been purged by the site soon after it became a hot topic on social media.
