Bill Russell turns 80 today.

It's a milestone worth noting here and elsewhere.

From his two NCAA titles and Olympic gold medal in 1956, to his last world title with the Celtics in 1969, Russell was a champion unmatched in the history of the NBA. He led the Celtics to 11 NBA titles in 13 seasons. His long-time teammate, Sam Jones, was with him for 10 of those rings.

Off all the stats and numbers produced by Russell, one stands out as perhaps the greatest single numeric stat in Boston sports history [not counting of course Ted Williams' 39-0 record in the Korean War].

Bill Russell was 10-0 in Game 7s.

LeBron, M.J., Kobe, Wilt, Larry, no one will ever match that Perfect 10.

At least not in this time-space continuum.

Sadly, Russell's greatness is forgotten by some today.

For starters, he's not Morgan Freeman - even though he was God-like on the parquet:

And too many journo-kids on the internet seem sadly unaware of his presence in NBA history.

Uncle Drew [aka Kyrie Irving] got plenty of wisdom from Russell in his series of ads for Pepsi MAX. "This game has always been, and will always be, about buckets."

Maybe, Irving can bring some of those buckets to Boston Danny Ainge is able to finagle a way to get him in a Celtics uniform.

As the first major black superstar athlete in Boston, Russell, who became a coach and broadcaster, endured his share of racial bigotry. Thankfully, those sentiments were not in the majority and were eventually assigned to the ash heap of history.

Today, we'll say a hearty "Happy Birthday" to the winningest face on the Mount Rushmore of Boston Sports.

And thanks for the memories, sir.
