25th South East Asian Games (SEA Games) in Vientiane, Laos

Laos played host to the 25th South East Asian Games (SEA Games) in the capital Vientiane, the first time the country hosted the event. Thailand continued to dominate the medals stand in the 11-nation competition. One of the poorest nations in the region, Laos enjoyed an infusion of aid estimated at US $85 million for infrastructure and planning. The event has grown from the 527 athletes in the first games in 1959 to over 3100 competing in Vientiane, mirroring the economic and population growth in the region as a whole. ( 19 photos total)
