The Celtics acquired Baker and Shammond Williams for Kenny Anderson, Vitaly Potapenko, and Joseph Forte on July 23, 2001. The Celtics waived Baker on Feb. 14, 2004, after he violated a testing program he entered in 2003 following treatment for alcohol abuse. Despite the violation, the Celtics were still stuck with Baker's enormous contract. They paid Baker $5.3 million in 2006-2007 despite his not being on the roster.
