Video: Celtics 79, Hawks 76

Ray Allen scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Celtics over the Hawks 79-76. In the video above, the Globe's Gary Washburn and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Michael Cunningham discuss the game.


Final: Celtics 79-76: Ray Allen sinks two free throws to give the Celtics a 3-point lead and then Jeff Teague airballs a 3-pointer and the Celtics hang on. Teague taunted Allen after a dunk that changed the game's momentum. Joe Johnson finished with 25 for Atlanta, 14 in the fourth quarter. Allen leads the Celtics with 19 points.

Fourth quarter, 28.0, Celtics 76-71: Josh Smith misses a 3-pointer badly and then Joe Johnson gets picked by Rajon Rondo. Mickael Pietrus hits one of two free throws to give Atlanta the ball. Both teams are out of fouls.

Fourth quarter, 1:02, Celtics 75-71: The Celtics' season-long habit of letting up after a big lead has struck again. The Hawks are on an 11-0 run and the Celtics haven't scored in nearly 3 minutes. Joe Johnson has two 3-pointers during the run. Celtics ball.

Fourth quarter, 2:44, Celtics 75-63: A 13-0 run sparked by three straight 3-pointers have put the Celtics ahead comfortably as they try to hold on in the ATL. Ray Allen has 17 points and has been on fire since being dunked on an taunted by Jeff Teague. Since then, the Celtics are on a 36-16 run.

Fourth quarter, 5:56, Celtics 64-58: The Celtics are winning this game with defense as the Hawks have committed four turnovers in the quarter. Meanwhile, the Celtics are also beginning to hit shots as Brandon Bass shook off the rust for a jumper that has this crowd filled with Celtics fans cheering vigorously.

End of third quarter, Hawks 51-50: The Celtics play of the game just occurred when Rajon Rondo duped the Hawks by motioning to Kevin Garnett to go to basket for alley-oop only to flip the ball to Ray Allen for a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Celtics end quarter on an 11-4 run to get close.

Third quarter, 2:42, Hawks 47-45: Celtics are on a 6-0 run but Paul Pierce just missed a layup that would have tied the game. He was 1-for-5 shooting in the first half and is 1 of 5 in the third quarter. Kevin Garnett has 10 points on 5-for-12 shooting with seven rebounds while Rajon Rondo has 8 points, 8 assists and 3 rebounds.

Third quarter, 5:47, Hawks 47-40: Celtics can't get a break nor can they hit a shot. They are 2 of 8 from the field in the quarter and have already committed six fouls, putting the Hawks in the bonus. Kevin Garnett leads the Celtics with 10 points while Paul Pierce is on the bench with his fourth foul. Jeff Teague excited the crowd with a dunk on Ray Allen but picked up a technical for screaming after the play.

Halftime, Hawks 33-31: Yeah it's that bad. The Celtics are shooting 35.1 percent and the Hawks are shooting 34.1. The Hawks have attempted four more field goals while the Celtics have 11 turnovers, including three in 15 listless minutes from Paul Pierce, who has 4 points and three fouls.

Second quarter, 1:38, Hawks 31-27: Atlanta was the first to break 30 in this really putrid offensive showing for both teams and the Celtics are missing countless open shots. Rajon Rondo is 2-for-7 shooting while Paul Pierce is 1 of 5 and Kevin Garnett 4 of 10.

Second quarter, 4:21, Tied at 25: The Celtics are beginning to hit shots and they are still shooting just 35 percent. The Hawks are shooting 31 percent and each team has just been awful in terms of running their offense. It is really ugly here at Philips Arena. Kevin Garnett has taken 10 of Boston's 31 shots and has hit 4 of his past 6.

End of first quarter, Hawks 15-12: The Celtics just can't hit a shot so far, but neither can the Hawks, so we have this really low score. The Celtics shot 25 percent in the first period, including a combined 3 of 14 from Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Rondo has 6 points while Josh Smith has 8 for Atlanta.

First quarter, 5:48, Tied at 8: The Celtics are trying to play with some early passion but have missed seven of 10 shots, including two jumpers that landed front rim from Paul Pierce. Josh Smith has 6 points but all on jumpers. The Celtics want to keep the athletic Smith outside the paint.
