In their first game without Yao Ming, Luther Head had 18 points to lead the Rockets to a 94-69 win over the Washington Wizards last night in Houston, their 13th straight victory.
Yao is out for the season with a stress fracture in his left foot. The Rockets didn't seem to miss their All-Star center, jumping to a 7-0 lead and never trailing as they coasted to their 17th win in the last 18 games.
Houston started 41-year-old Dikembe Mutombo in place of Yao, but also used 6-foot-9-inch Carl Landry in the spot. Landry finished with 12 points.
The Wizards were doomed by a first half in which they managed a franchise-low 23 points and couldn't dig themselves out of a 28-point halftime deficit.
Tracy McGrady was ineffective for the first three quarters, going 2 of 11 with 6 points. He finished with 11. With one star out and another struggling, the Rockets got double-digit contributions from several others, including Luis Scola, who was 7 of 7 for 14 points. Rafer Alston finished with 13 points.
Heat 107, Kings 86 - Shawn Marion scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting, Udonis Haslem added 17, and host Miami used a huge third quarter to beat Sacramento and snap an 11-game losing streak.
Dwyane Wade finished with 15 points and nine assists for the Heat, who won for just the second time in their last 28 games.
Lakers 96, Trail Blazers 83 - Kobe Bryant scored 11 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and host Los Angeles won its ninth straight victory by holding Portland to 36 percent field goal shooting.
Suns 127, Grizzlies 113 - Steve Nash had 25 points and 13 assists and Shaquille O'Neal added 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds for visiting Phoenix. O'Neal got his first double double since joining the Phoenix lineup Feb. 20.
Bucks 105, Cavaliers 102 - Michael Redd hit a winning 3-pointer as the final horn sounded for host Milwaukee. LeBron James had just hit a tying layup with 5.9 seconds left when Redd launched a 27-foot shot from the left side that sailed through the basket with 0.1 seconds remaining on the clock.
Timberwolves 111, Jazz 100 - Al Jefferson and Rashad McCants each scored 22 points, while Randy Foye added a season-high 20 for host Minnesota. The Timberwolves forced 24 turnovers and held the Jazz to 6-for-21 shooting in the final quarter.
Warriors 105, SuperSonics 99 - Monta Ellis scored 30 points, Austin Croshere added 14 in the decisive third quarter without missing a shot, and host Golden State won for the fifth time in seven games.
Magic 102, Nets 92 - Hedo Turkoglu scored 17 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and visiting Orlando won its third straight game.
