Reserves rally Sun past Silver Stars

Asjha Jones matched her career high with 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Connecticut Sun to a 72-65 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars yesterday in Uncasville, Conn.

With the five starters struggling offensively, coach Mike Thibault turned to his backups to pull the Eastern Conference-leading Sun (21-6) out of trouble in the third quarter when the Sun trailed by as many as 7 points.

Jones had 12 points and reserve forward LeCoe Willingham chipped in 5 of her 9 in a 17-6 run that turned the game around late in the third quarter.

The Sun reserves finished with a season-high 42 points, outscoring Connecticut's starters by 12 points and the San Antonio reserves by 29.

Fever 69, Sky 64 -- Tamika Catchings had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead visiting Indiana past Chicago.

The Sky rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to pull within 1 (44-43) with 4:59 remaining in the third. However, Catchings had two baskets in an 8-0 run as Indiana extended the lead to 9 by the end of the quarter.

Chicago got as close as 4 (66-62) in the fourth, but Anna DeForge scored 6 of her 14 points in the final 1:46 to seal the win.

Liberty 78, Lynx 69 -- Barbara Farris and Shameka Christon scored 20 points apiece to help host New York win its third straight game.

Sparks 71, Storm 70 -- Lisa Leslie scored 31 points as visiting Los Angeles won for the 10th time in 11 games. Leslie shot 14 for 24 for the Western Conference-leading Sparks (23-6).

Comets 82, Mercury 80 -- Astou Ndiaye-Diatta made a 10-footer in the lane with 4.1 seconds left to lift visiting Houston over Phoenix.

Mystics 78, Sting 73 -- DeLisha Milton-Jones scored 22 of her career-high 26 points in the second half to help host Washington clinch the final Eastern Conference playoff berth.

Monarchs 94, Shock 61 -- Rebekkah Brunson had a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds as Sacramento routed visiting Detroit to snap a three-game losing streak.
