Coach McHale gets 1st win with Timberwolves

Kevin McHale earned his first coaching victory and Michael Olowokandi had 17 points and 12 rebounds in Minnesota's 82-71 victory over New Jersey last night at Minneapolis.

Kevin Garnett, who shot 0 for 5 from the floor in the first half, scored 17 points. Wally Szczerbiak added 14 for Minnesota, which won for just the second time in the last 10 games.

Vince Carter had 25 of his 32 points in the first half for New Jersey, but the Nets had little else to cheer. The Record of Bergen County, N.J., citing league sources, said All-Star guard Jason Kidd has let management know he wants to play with Garnett, believing the combination would have a good chance at winning and NBA title.

Lakers 102, Jazz 95 -- Kobe Bryant scored 40 points in his second game back from an ankle injury, leading host Los Angeles. Bryant went 12 of 19 from the floor and 15 of 19 from the line, had eight assists, and five rebounds.

Nuggets 100, Hawks 96 -- Carmelo Anthony's jump shot with nine-10ths of a second to play gave Denver its first victory in Atlanta since 1988. Anthony led the Nuggets with 22 points as Denver ended a 14-game losing streak in Atlanta.

Mavericks 114, Warriors 107 -- Dirk Nowitzki had 35 points and 11 rebounds, Michael Finley scored 24 points and Dallas held off host Golden State. Devin Harris scored 15 points for the Mavericks, who beat Golden State for the 22d time in their last 24 meetings.

Magic 99, Clippers 94 -- Grant Hill scored a season-high 39 points and Steve Francis had two clutch jump shots in the final minute for host Orlando, as Los Angeles lost its sixth straight game.

Rockets 123, Wizards 93 -- Tracy McGrady scored 34 points and Yao Ming had 23, leading host Houston to its eighth straight win, its longest since March 1999 and the best active streak in the league.

Bulls 107, Kings 102 -- Rookie Ben Gordon scored 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as host Chicago snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Kings, beating them for the first time since Feb. 28, 1998.
