Sheryl Swoopes scored 29 points and Tina Thompson added 19 to lead the Houston Comets to a 60-53 victory over host Charlotte in the Sting's season opener last night.
Swoopes and Thompson combined for all but 12 of Houston's points as the Comets (1-1) bounced back from Thursday's season-opening loss to San Antonio.
Swoopes, limited to 8 points on 4-of-13 shooting Thursday, scored 8 straight points in a run that gave Houston a 38-32 lead with 11:38 left.
Thompson's 3-pointer with 8:33 remaining gave the Comets their largest lead, 47-36.
Swoopes's fadeaway from the left baseline with 2:03 left ended the Sting's comeback hopes.
Andrea Stinson scored 13 points for the Sting, who shot 37 percent.
Charlotte played without last year's leading scorer, former Harvard star Allison Feaster, who returned yesterday after finishing her season for a team in France. She is expected to play today at Washington.
The Sting made their debut in orange and blue uniforms and played on a newly painted court to match the colors of the expansion Charlotte Bobcats.
Fever 69, Liberty 67 -- Kelly Miller, who played for the Sting last season, scored 18 points to help host Indiana edge New York in the season opener for both teams.
Tamika Catchings scored 14 points for Indiana, and Kristen Rasmussen added 12, including a pair of free throws that iced the game in the final seconds.
