In 1943, the Red Sox lost Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio to the war effort. Lucier was invited to spring training. His salary was $750 a month. ‘‘That was pretty good money,' he said. 'I compared that with my father working in the cotton mill. He was making $19 a week.’’
