Red Sox spring training primer

Bobby Valentine takes the managerial reins Once Terry Francona departed, the search for a new manager was on. The Globe's Nick Cafardo hinted early on that the venerable Valentine would be in the mix before we saw Dale Sveum, Pete Mackanin, Sandy Alomar Jr., Torey Lovullo, and Gene Lamont take part in the interview process. But it was Valentine who got the nod from GM Ben Cherington more than two months after Terry Francona left the team.
