Red Sox spring training primer

Francona gone after 8 seasons in Boston Two-time World Series champion Terry Francona left the Red Sox after the tumultuous end to the 2011 season in what the both the team and he described as a mutual decision. The Globe reported that Francona was distracted by marital issues and his use of pain medication last season, an allegation the former Red Sox manager denied. Francona interviewed for the Cardinals' manager job, but Mike Matheny was hired for the position. Francona will be working as an analyst on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball telecast.
