Shoppach returns to Boston to back up Salty
Drafted by the Red Sox in 2001, Shoppach will return to Boston this season after playing the last six years with the Rays and Indians. Shoppach, who hits southpaws better than righthanders, is slotted to spell Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who is better against righthanders. Signing Shoppach likely means the end for Jason Varitek's playing days in Boston.
"We know Shop well," Cherington said, noting that defense was one of the team's needs. "We felt like in a perfect world, we would look to solidify the catching position by adding strengths."
