Diamond in the rough
Epstein signed David Ortiz for $1.25 million in January 2003 and the move paid dividends. Ortiz shocked Red Sox Nation in 2003 with 31 homers 101 RBIs in 128 games, but he was just getting started. While Epstein re-signed him three times from 2004 to 2007, Ortiz slugged more than 35 home runs and drove in at least 117 runs each season. More importantly, he was a key cog on both the 2004 and 2007 (pictured) World Series teams.
