The Red Sox-Cubs connection
Bill Buckner, 1BWith the Cubs: Bill Buckner played mostly in the outfield with the Dodgers from 1969-1976, but a staph infection in his ankle forced him to move to first base when he joined the Cubs in 1977. He played eight seasons in Chicago, winning a batting title in 1980 (.324), earning a spot on the 1981 All-Star team, and receiving votes for Most Valuable Player five times.
With the Red Sox: The Cubs received Dennis Eckersley in a trade for Buckner on May 25, 1984, and he played the next three and a half seasons in Boston. After brief stints with the Angels and Royals, Buckner returned to Boston in 1990. But his infamous error in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series against the Mets will forever be remembered in Beantown.
