Meet the 2011 Red Sox
In the bullpenRH Tim Wakefield
Fast fact: At 44, Wakefield is the oldest active player in baseball. The oldest player ever to play for the Red Sox was Deacon McGuire at 44 years, 280 days in 1908. Wakefield turns 45 on Aug. 2.
Lowdown: He returns to a role he dislikes, that of emergency starter and mop-up reliever. Wakefield had a 5.34 ERA last season but provided 140 innings. He needs seven wins for 200 in his career and 14 to break the team record of 192 held by Roger Clemens and Cy Young. Those milestones will be hard to come by.
