Bobby Valentine: Career highs and lows
Once again, Valentine headed for Japan. In 2004, he returned as manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines. In 2005, the team won its first Japan Series championship in a four-game sweep. Valentine was tossed into the air after a 3-2 victory over the Hanshin Tigers in Game Four in the Japan Series at Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture.
He spent six years as the team's popular manager, and when his tenure was coming to an end in 2009, more than 110,000 fans signed a petition to keep him from being let go. Their efforts failed. Ownership said it couldn't afford him.
