Baseball's biggest collapses
Led by Justin Verlander (left), Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez and Curtis Granderson, the Tigers were a first-place team most of the season. Detroit rose to the top of the AL Central May 10 and led by as many as seven games Sept. 6. But then came the Joe Mauer-led Twins, who surged down the stretch to win 16 of their last 20 games to force a one-game playoff with the Tigers. The Twins won it, 6-5, in 12 innings, the Red Sox won the wild card, and the Tigers missed the playoffs.
