Red Sox vs. Yankees, position by position

Catcher

Call it VMart versus the veteran.

Victor Martinez, the Red Sox' switch-hitting No. 3 batter who has been an essential part of the team since the moment he arrived from Cleveland at the trading deadline last season, will be the primary catcher. He batted .336 with 8 homers in 257 plate appearances with the Sox. Admirable but fading 37-year-old Jason Varitek serves as the backup.

For the Yankees, Jorge Posada returns for his 14th full season in pinstripes. While defense has never been his greatest attribute, he's still one of baseball's best-hitting catchers -- he had 22 HRs and an .885 OPS at age 37.
