It still seems probable that Lowell, who batted .290 with 17 homers last year but was replaced as the starting third baseman by defensive whiz Adrian Beltre, will be dealt to a place where he can play regularly. The question is: Where? Rumors that he'd be dealt to the Rangers seemed to fade when Texas acquired Ryan Garko Thursday. So for now he begins the season as an overqualified and well-compensated backup.
