The Red Sox started the 2009 season with both Lowrie and Lugo expected to split time at shortstop. Lowrie had ongoing injury issues, while Lugo never filled the role that he was expected to. In July Lugo was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, and three weeks later the Sox traded for Alex Gonzalez to rejoin the team. Gonzalez got most of the starts once he came to Boston, but he signed as a free agent with the Blue Jays on Nov. 26.
