None of the reclamation projects have panned out
While the Yankees were spending hundreds of millions of dollars on free agents over the winter, Epstein was praised for signing a plethora of low-risk, high-reward players such as pitchers John Smoltz, Brad Penny, and Takashi Saito, and outfielder Rocco Baldelli. But right now, the quartet could be classified as low-risk, no-reward. Smoltz (8.32 ERA) was a sad disaster, Penny has a 5.20 ERA and is yet to pitch seven full innings, Saito has been mediocre, and Baldelli has a .322 on-base percentage in 111 at-bats.
