Rice was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round (No. 15 overall) of the 1971 draft and broke into the majors in 1974. However, his rookie year came in 1975. The ''Gold Dust Twins'' -- Rice and Fred Lynn -- were the Sox' most impressive rookie duo that season. Rice hit .309 with 22 homers and 102 RBIs, finishing second in Rookie of the Year balloting to Lynn, who hit .331 with 21 homers and 105 RBIs.
