Erik Bedard acquired
In the waning hours before the 2011 trade deadline, Sox GM Theo Epstein was busy again. It wasn't until after the 4 p.m. deadline had passed when the Bedard deal was finalized. The Sox needed a third team to get the deal done, the Dodgers, who received three minor leaguers from the Sox -- catcher Tim Federowicz and righthanded pitchers Stephen Fife and Juan Rodriguez -- and sent minor league outfielder Trayvon Robinson to the Sox. The Sox then traded Robinson and outfield prospect Chih-Hsien Chiang to the Mariners for Bedard and reliever Josh Fields. Bedard sported a 4-7 record with a 3.45 ERA while Fields has pitched in the highest levels in the Mariners organization this season. Epstein had a deal lined up for Oakland A's starter Rich Harden, but his medical history worried Epstein and the trade was called off.
