SAN DIEGO -- Hours after Jon Lester signed with the Chicago Cubs, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington sat down with reporters to discuss his pursuit of the lefty.
Cherington said, at the end of the day, the Red Sox failed to sign Lester because other teams were willing to pay more than they were.
"Ultimately, other teams were willing to go further and (Lester) chose to go in another direction," he said. "I think every team just has to figure out where their walk away is, and we went as far as we thought we could go."
Cherington also discussed the team's plans going forward, saying he remains confident they'll fill out the rotation with quality arms.
