While the 2014 season is turning into a bit of a train wreck for the Boston Red Sox, there’s good news down on the farm, as two young stars in Pawtucket are headed for the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game.

Starting pitched Anthony Ranaudo and catcher Christian Vazquez were named to the International League All-Star team on Wednesday, joining 28 other IL members at the event that will be hosted by the Durham Bulls on July 16.

Ranaudo has made 17 starts for the PawSox this season, going 9-4 with a 2.35 ERA. His nine wins are tied for second in the International League and his ERA also puts him in the top-5 in that category.

The 24-year-old righthander was taken by the Red Sox as a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2d rounds of the 2010 MLB Draft after pitching at LSU. He went 8-4 with a 2.95 ERA in 19 starts for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs in 2013 en route to being named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year, leading the league with a 1.09 WHIP and opponent batting average of just .204.

Vazquez has been regarded as one of the best defensive players in the Red Sox farm system for several years. In 62 games for the PawSox in 2014, he’s hitting .275 with three home runs and 19 RBIs.

The Red Sox selected the native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico in the 9th round at the 2008 draft when he was just 17. He led the Eastern League by throwing out 46.5 percent (47 of 101) of would-be basestealers. Vazquez also hit .289 with five home runs and 48 RBIs and was named the Sea Dogs’ 2013 MVP.

Vazquez is the second PawSox catcher in the past three seasons to be named an All-Star, as teammate Ryan Lavarnway played in the 2012 event. The PawSox have now had a starting pitcher named to the team in consecutive seasons, with Rubby De La Rosa chosen for the 2013 edition, although he was ultimately held out of the game.
