From first baseman Carlos Pena:
"We stand by each other, support each other. I thought the play was dirty, so we were all there for [Luke Scott], thatís what it boils down to.
You were going at it with Sox pitching coach Bob McClure?
"When youíre in the heat of the whole entire situation, things just happen. Right now if you ask me what was going on, I canít go back and remember. Theyíre standing for what they believe in, and weíre standing for what we believe in, and thatís fine. Thatís just baseball, thatís the way it goes. Sometimes things get out of control because weíre so competitive out there. We look out for each other. In a way itís a good thing, itís just unfortunate it needs it escalate to that point."
Rays manager Joe Maddon accused the Red Sox of starting it. Do you believe that?
"I stand behind Joe. Iím not one to start making comments."
What did you see?
"We saw one behind his back, another close almost hit him, and the last one hits him. Our whole dugout knew it was coming, so when it actually happened youíre like there it is, what other proof do you need? He goes out there and gets two quick outs, throws strikes, and all of a sudden he canít find the strike zone? We just thought it was dirty."
Once order on the field was restored and the teams were returning to their dugouts, Rays center fielder B.J. Upton engaged in a verbal altercation with a male fan. Upton explains:
"He said something about [Rays pitcher David Price], definitely not suitable for TV, I didnít like it. You know what, I donít have a problem with fans heckling and all that, but I think sometimes they can cross the line, and I felt like he did, and I kind of lost my cool. I think the people that have been around me know that itís tough for me to get there, but he sent me there tonight."
Were the fan's comments racial?
"Um, I donít know. Itís over with."
Will there be any kind of carryover?
"No, not that I know of. Tonightís over, hopefully both sides will move on."
Did you expect anything to happen in the ninth inning?
"No, there was no reason to. I donít know what the thinking was behind it. You know what, balls can get away from guys, so I canít really say."
