FORT MYERS, Fla. — Attention autograph seekers, today is not the day to hang around outside the main gate waiting for a player to roll down his car window and sign.

The Red Sox have a workout then many of the players will attend the 19th annual Southwest Florida Children’s Hospital celebrity golf tournament at The Forest. So they'll be in a hurry to get out of here and hit the course.

Bobby V said yesterday that he rarely plays — "Only when they really need somebody," he said — but will lend his support to the cause.

Starting pitchers tend to be the best golfers on any team, mainly because they have the most opportunities to play. Woe is the position player who plays 18 during the day and then goes 0 for 4 that night. But a starter can pitch his game and play golf for three straight days without anybody raising an eyebrow.

When Tom Glavine was with the Braves, he and John Smoltz would sometimes play with Tiger Woods in Orlando during spring training. For starters, spring training is often about golf as much as it is baseball.

Throw in the better money and it's no wonder Daniel Bard wants to get out of the bullpen.
