Good to see you: Garcia is 8-3, 4.56 in 18 career appearances against the Sox. He look the loss on May 15, allowing five runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings. Youkilis and Ortiz homered off him.

Sox bullpen notes: Daniel Bard has been lights out his last five outings: 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. ... Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed: The sample size is too small to get carried away with. But Lowrie has wildly different splits against righthanders (.222/.293/.299) and lefties (.426/.438/.672) this season. Overall, he is 12 of 53 (.226) in his last 14 games with two extra-base hits and five RBIs. The return of Marco Scutaro from the disabled list today appears to be well-timed.

Concrete jungles where dreams are made of: Pedroia is 13 of 24 (.542) against the Yankees this season with four extra-base hits and five RBIs in six games. Against everybody else (in 51 games) he is 42 of 201 (.209) with eight extra-base hits and 15 RBIs

They're hot: Ortiz was 12 of 22 on the six-game homestand with six extra-base hits, six RBIs and five runs scored. He is up to .325. ... Crawford has a five-game hit streak and is 6 of 13 with eight RBIs in his last three games.

Milestone man: Derek Jeter starts the series with 2,986 career hits. Jeter has 282 of his hits against the Sox. He has more against only the Orioles (303) and Blue Jays (285).

Stat of the Day: In the last 10 seasons, the Yankees lead the series 87-86 but the Red Sox have scored 32 more runs. In the last 97 games, the Yankees lead 49-48 with three runs (537-534 Yankees) separating the teams. How's that for close?

Song of the Day: "American Girl" by Goo Goo Dolls from The Concert For New York City record.
