The Yankees have signed outfielder Jason Place, a former first-round pick of the Red Sox who was released in spring training. The Octagon Baseball Twitter feed had the news.
Place was the 27th overall selection of the 2006 draft out of Wren High in Piedmont, S.C. He signed for $1.3 million. Place hit .234/.315/.390 in his career, never getting above Double A.
Place has physical tools but it never worked out for him over five seasons. The odds are long that will change with the Yankees. But former first-round pick almost always get a second chance.
