Adrian Beltre is back in the lineup after sitting out last night's game, but Terry Francona said that the third basemen still is not at full strength after suffering a strained left hamstring in the final game before the All-Star break.
"I actually told him that if I didn’t like what I saw during BP, I was going to take him out of the game," Francona said. "He’s certainly not 100 percent. I think what we’re hoping is that we can get the production out of his bat. If we need to pinch run for him later, we certainly would."
Victor Martinez also took batting practice today, but in a much more limited capacity. Despite the catcher's injured thumb, Martinez can swing from the left side of the plate, but batting right-handed and catching are still out of play.
"Once we can get that glove on and he can catch, they can rig up a lot of contraptions to take away some of the pressure, but he’s just not there yet," Francona said.
Francona said that Manny Delcarmen will be activated from the disabled list tomorrow, and that Jeremy Hermida will playing outfield tomorrow and doing designated hitter duty for Portland on Sunday as he makes his way back from injured ribs.
Francona also said that Jacoby Ellsbury, who made the trip to Fort Myers, Fla., after the team's series in Toronto, has asked to go beyond the parameters originally set for his treatment.
"He wanted to do a little bit more, which we were completely OK with," Francona said. "It's as tolerated. That's his program. So if he can tolerate more, go."
