Scott Schoeneweis just told the Globe he was designated for assignment. No word on who is coming up. More to come on this.

UPDATE, 11:15 p.m.: Angel Sanchez will be here tomorrow from Pawtucket and will start at shortstop according to the Sox. Marco Scutaro has what is being described as "tennis elbow" in his left (non-throwing) elbow.

Scutaro had a cortisone shot before the game today and is going to miss at least two games. Terry Francona said the injury has bothered him at the plate while Theo Epstein chimed in that it also has affected him in the field closing his glove around balls.

Once Scutaro is able to play, the Red Sox would add another reliever. Based on performance in Pawtucket, that is likely to be Scott Atchison.

UPDATE, 11:21 p.m.: It was unintentional of course. But tomorrow is the first anniversary of the death of Schoeneweis's wife, Gabrielle, to a drug overdose. Baseball is a pretty cruel game sometimes.

“Tomorrow’s a tough day for me and my family anyway,” he said. “But I guess everything’s for a reason. I’ll get to be home. … There are worse things obviously. I’ve been through all that.”

UPDATE, 11:33 p.m.: For those of you asking, the Red Sox did not consider bringing up Jose Iglesias from Portland. The first reason is that he's not even two months into his first professional season. It also wouldn't make much sense to bring him up for two or three games. Plus it starts his arbitration clock, etc.

UPDATE, 12:13 a.m.: Francona on Scutaro's injury:

“It’s actually been bothering him for a while. We know it’s been bothering when he’s been swinging the bat. He really wanted to play through it. He’s done a nice job. We talked about it last week a little bit and the more we talked it made sense to do that. He’s going to be just fine.”
