The Red Sox designated Darnell McDonald for assignment after the game to make room on the roster for Mike Cameron.

They now have 10 days to trade him, release him or pass him through waivers.

McDonald hit .263 with three homers and 11 RBI over 31 games. He started 24 of those games. The Sox were 4-9 when McDonald showed up and 25-21 when he left. He had plenty to do with that, too.

Terry Francona appeared emotional discussing the move, saying the Sox had no other choice. He said he hoped for McDonald's sake that another major league team gave him a chance but that it would be beneficial for the Red Sox if he cleared waivers.
