FORT MYERS, Fla. -- According to Baseball-Reference.com, there have been 15,946 hit batsmen in the history of professional baseball (starting in 1876). And while it does not even count towards that number, when a player gets plunked during Red Sox spring training, it sometimes becomes the biggest news of the day.

Which was exactly the case Sunday when newcomer Brad Wilkerson took a fastball off the right triceps on an errant toss by Jon Lester during live batting practice. Wilkerson barely missed a beat (even if he did playfully show reporters a seemingly flesh-colored "bruise" in the clubhouse following practice) and yet this might have been the day's top headline.

Welcome to spring training, where Terry Francona fielded a question Sunday about if he "ever gets bored." It did elicit one of the more interesting answers of the day and led to a playful exchange with the media that involved general manager Theo Epstein.

The Globe's Amalie Benjamin recaps all this and a breaking development in the facial hair of Kevin Youkilis in today's daily recap video. Click on the player at the top of the page to watch.

What else happened in Fort Myers Sunday?

  • Short hops -- The Globe's Tony Massarotti checks in with assorted thoughts while waiting for the games to start up.

  • Photo Day -- Say cheese! The Sox dressed up in game uniforms and posed for the cameras.

  • Bring your child to work day -- David Ortiz shared a morning jog with his son, D'Angelo, while Julio Lugo and his son, Julio Alejandro, performed a tandem parachute run. The two families mingled Sunday (see below).
