By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

Eric Gagne met with the media this afternoon after making the rounds of the Sox clubhouse, introducing himself to his new mates, including Jonathan Papelbon. Terry Francona said he met with Gagne this winter at the winter meetings, when the Sox were shopping for a closer and Gagne was available, but "we didn't have wine,'' he said.

For those wondering how the number issue was going to be resolved--Gagne has always worn No. 38, the same as Schill--the reliever switched his number to 83. That's the second highest in Sox history, behind only the No. 84 worn by J.T. Snow in 2004.

Red Sox:

1. Julio Lugo, SS
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
