David Ortiz today was named American League co-player of the week with Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians.

Last week, Ortiz hit .370 (10-27) with a 1.000 slugging percentage, two doubles, five homers, eight RBI and 27 total bases. In a game against the Indians on July 31, he went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs, including the game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was Ortiz’s fifth walk-off hit of the season. He also went 2-for-3 with two home runs and two RBI at Tampa Bay on Aug. 4. This is Ortiz’s first player of the week award this season and his third overall. Ortiz was the AL player of the month for the month of July (.339, 14 HRs, 35 RBIs). He is the first Red Sox player to receive the weekly honor this season.

Ortiz enters Tuesday’s game in Kansas City with 999 career hits.
