Bard to catch Monday

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

Terry Francona reiterated that Josh Bard will catch Tim Wakefield in the opener of the two-game series against the Yankees Monday. Bard has been charged with 10 passed balls in five starts. The pitching matchups against the Yanks: Wakefield vs Chien-Ming Wang on Monday and Josh Beckett vs. Shawn Chacon on Tuesday.

Alex Cora will play second tonight in place of Mark Loretta, who failed to get the ball out of the infield in five at-abts Friday, leaving six runners on, and is just 4 for 32 (.125) on the trip. Cora, who had a 15-pitch at-bat Thursday in Cleveland, will hit in the 2-hole.

"We think it might do Mark some good,'' Manager Terry Francona said. "I think he's been trying too hard.''

D-Rays outfielder Rocco Baldelli, the Rhode Island native, was to have gone to Double-A Montgomery to begin a rehab assignment tomorrow, but he reported continued hamstring soreness and is holding off. Baldelli missed all of last season with knee and elbow injuries; the hamstring problems began in spring training.
