BOSTON—The giant Citgo sign visible over Fenway Park's famous Green Monster is lighting up the night again.
The 3,600-square-foot sign featuring the Venezuelan oil company's iconic red triangle on a white background has been dark since the middle of the summer for a makeover. It was turned on again Friday during the seventh-inning stretch of the Boston Red Sox game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In the past two months, electricians have replaced about 218,000 LED lights on the 60-foot by 60-foot sign with brighter, more energy-efficient, and weather-resistant lights.
The 45-year-old sign went dark for four years starting in 1979 at the height of the energy crisis, and in 1982 Citgo announced plans to dismantle it. The sign stayed after an uproar from Red Sox fans.
