■RHP Josh Beckett (back, on DL since May 19): He will face hitters Thursday, then start a minor league rehab assignment next week. He is expected to return by the final week of July, but it could be earlier if he regains endurance quickly.
■2B Dustin Pedroia (left foot, on DL since June 26): He is expected to miss no more than six weeks, although that could be shortened if he responds well to treatment and rehab.
■C Victor Martinez (left thumb, placed on DL yesterday): The good news is he will not need surgery.
■OF Jacoby Ellsbury (ribs, on DL since May 28): Ellsbury has been away from the team since June 9, resting and rehabilitating at an Arizona training center. He has not started baseball activities and his status remains cloudy.
■OF Jeremy Hermida (ribs, on DL since June 10): Hermida has been swinging a bat for several days and hopes to start a minor league rehab assignment soon.
■3B-1B Mike Lowell (right hip, on DL since June 24): Lowell’s chronic condition will not heal, which could lead to an extended stay on the disabled list. The Red Sox would prefer the roster flexibility.
■INF Jed Lowrie (mononucleosis, on DL since March 26): Lowrie will see an Atlanta-based specialist to get clearance before starting a rehab assignment with Single A Lowell.
■ RHP Clay Buchholz (left hamstring, not on DL): He has a small tear on the lower part of the hamstring. Yesterday’s day off and the day off Thursday will allow the Red Sox to rest him until July 6, if needed.
■OF Mike Cameron (lower abdominal strain, not on DL): Cameron is managing the pain, playing no more than three days in a row and receiving constant treatment. He hopes to improve gradually and get through the season before having surgery.
