Had the Red Sox elected to put Jacoby Ellsbury on the disabled list, he could not have returned earlier than April 27 in Texas. That decision, while temporarily leaving the team shorthanded in the outfield, appeared prudent yesterday after Ellsbury played catch and took 25 swings in the batting cage.
