Red Sox recall Delcarmen, Shoppach
The Red Sox recalled righthanded pitcher Manny Delcarmen and catcher Kelly Shoppach from Triple-A Pawtucket today. Both players are expected to be available for tonights game against the Angels.
The 23-year-old Delcarmen is back with Boston for the third time this season, as he was first recalled to make his major league debut July 26. The Hyde Park native has posted a 4.76 ERA in six big league relief appearances. Delcarmen went 3-1 with two saves and a 1.29 ERA in 15 games for Pawtucket after opening the year in Double-A Portland, where he was 4-4 with three saves and a 3.23 ERA in 31 appearances.
Shoppach made his major league debut for Boston earlier this season, playing six games and going hitless in 11 at-bats. The 25-year-old Shoppach hit 24 of his 26 homers as a catcher to break his own record for homers in a single season by a Pawtucket catcher. He was named the catcher on the International Leagues post-season All-Star Team after ranking sixth in the league with 26 home runs and tied for 10th with a .507 slugging percentage.
