Outfielder Manny Ramírez has been a clutch performer for the Red Sox, but he has been an enigmatic slugger. A look at some of his bizarre episodes as a member of the Red Sox:

July 27, 2005: With right fielder Trot Nixon injured and a short bench, Ramírez takes the day off, despite manager Terry Francona telling him he was needed.

July 26, 2005: Jogs to first base on a grounder to second with a man on first in the 10th inning against Tampa Bay, but the ball is booted and he reaches despite his lethargy. The Sox win in 10 innings.

Aug. 30, 2003: Reportedly sighted at a bar in a Boston hotel socializing with Yankee Enrique Wilson despite being too sick to play (throat inflammation) in a three-game series against New York. He did not report for a doctor’s appointment at Fenway Park the next morning.

Aug. 29, 2003: In an interview with ESPN, Ramírez says he would like to play for the Yankees.

Sept. 9, 2002: Does not leave batter’s box after hitting a ground ball against Tampa Bay.

Sept. 7, 2002: Requests song "Good Times (I Get High)" by Styles for his plate appearances. Song is an ode to drugs with obscene lyrics that are played over Fenway Park PA system.

May 18, 2002: Loses diamond earring sliding into third base while rehabbing with the Pawtucket Red Sox in Syracuse. After the game, 13 PawSox players and the Syracuse grounds crew combed the third base bag area and found the stud, but not the diamond that was worth a reported $15,000.

May 10, 2002: Breaks finger sliding headfirst into Seattle catcher.

Dec. 10, 2001: Says he was uncomfortable in his first season in Boston, prompting Red Sox ownership to expand the clubhouse and create a separate room for media interviews.

Sept. 27, 2001: Misses last home game of the season for "personal reasons," a game that includes the team honoring Cal Ripken Jr. during his last game at Fenway.
