Petagine to have knee surgery

Roberto Petagine’s attempt to make the Red Sox roster may be over. The first baseman has a partially torn meniscus in his left knee, the Sox announced, and will have surgery next Tuesday. It’s not known how long he’ll be sidelined.

The 33-year-old Petagine will have the procedure in Boston, to be performed by Sox doc Thomas Gill.

Petagine had been hitting .286 with two RBIs in seven at bats this spring, and was in the running to take one of the final roster spots on the Sox. He has played the last six seasons with the Yakult Swallows in Japan's Central League.
