Sox activate Mendoza, demote Youkilis
The Red Sox today activated reliever Ramiro Mendoza from the disabled list and optioned third baseman Kevin Youkilis to Pawtucket, the Boston Globes Gordon Edes has learned.
Youkilis hit .287 with three homers and 19 RBIs with the Red Sox, and was recently reported to be taking ground balls at first base in preparation for possibly seeing some time there. He was recalled from Pawtucket on May 15 and recorded a .318 average, a homer and seven RBIs over the next 13 days, earning him A.L. Rookie of the Month honors.
Mendoza pitched just one inning for the Sox before going on the disabled list and missing the next 82 games with a sore shoulder. During his rehab assignment, he made eight appearances -- two for Single-A Sarasota and six for Triple-A Pawtucket -- compiling an 0-2 record and a 4.26 ERA. Under baseball rules that limit the length of rehab assignments, Mendoza had to be activated or released by today.
