Herrera helps LA beat Papelbon in 9th
Elian Herrera hit a tiebreaking RBI single off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Phillies, 4-3, Monday night in Philadelphia.
Placido Polanco hit a tying, two-run homer to help the Phillies rally from a 3-0 deficit against Clayton Kershaw, but it wasn’t enough.
Dee Gordon ripped a triple to right-center to start the ninth against Papelbon (0-2). Herrera followed with a grounder through the shortstop hole to put major league-leading Los Angeles ahead to stay. Papelbon is 15 for 15 in save opportunities, but hasn’t fared as well in non-save situations.
Athletics 12, Rangers 1 - Rookie Jarrod Parker (2-2) held Texas hitless until the eighth and Brandon Inge drove in four runs in an eight-run second inning as host Oakland routed Texas.
Giants 3, Cubs 2 - Ryan Vogelsong (4-2) won his fourth straight decision, Buster Posey scored the go-ahead run on a double-play groundball by Joaquin Arias in the seventh inning, and host San Francisco beat Chicago for a four-game sweep.
Cardinals 5, Mets 4 - Allen Craig hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth and visiting St. Louis beat New York to snap a five-game losing streak.
Twins 10, Royals 7 - Justin Morneau and Josh Willingham each hit two-run homers, Trevor Plouffe also went deep, and visiting Minnesota held off Kansas City as Cole De Vries (1-1) lasted five shaky innings to pick up his first major league victory in his third career start.
Rockies 4, Diamondbacks 0 - Rookie Christian Friedrich (4-1) pitched four-hit ball for seven innings, Wilin Rosario had a solo home run and an RBI infield single, and visiting Colorado won for the seventh time in eight games.
